Solid surface material, also known as solid surface composite, is a man-made material usually composed of a combination of alumina trihydrate (ATH), acrylic, epoxy or polyester resins and pigments. It is most frequently used for seamless countertop installations.
A solid surface material was first introduced by DuPont in 1967 under the name of Corian. Since the expiration of their patent other solid surface manufacturers have entered the market with their own branded products. These include Krion® by Porcelanosa Grupo, HIMACS by LX Hausys, Hanex Solid Surface by Hyundai L&C, Staron by Lotte Chemical and Velstone.
Solid Surface is non-porous and hygienic. It’s smooth surface doesn’t allow liquids to penetrate and prevents dirt and stains from penetrating the material. Bacterial and mold have nowhere to take root. Marks and stains stay on the surface and can be easily removed with a Scotchbrite pad and household cleaner.
Color-coordinated joint adhesive bonds solid surface with inconspicuous, nearly invisible seams. This results in a smooth surface that allows for the creation of large designs from a single element. Solid surface can also be formed in a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower-surrounds and bathtub.
Due to the non-porous characteristics of the material, solid surface countertops require very little regular maintenance. For most dirt and residue, use soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners (not window cleaner), rinse and wipe completely dry. Commercially available solid-surface cleaners will also work. Some colors may require more frequent cleaning to maintain a uniform finish. Darker colors tend to require more attention than lighter colors.
Solid surface sheets can be heated and bent into three dimensional shapes using a process called thermoforming. Flexible when heated, solid surface can be formed into many shapes, or worked like wood to give perfectly rounded edges. Your imagination is the only limit to what is possible using solid surface and a little creativity.
