Solid surface countertops are popular in commercial and residential settings due to their durability, resistance to stains, and ease of maintenance. However, over time, they can lose their shine, making the space look old and uninviting.

To maintain the elegant look of your kitchen or bathroom, it’s essential to know how to make your solid surface countertops shine again. Here is a complete guide, from simple cleaning to full restoration, to make your solid surface countertops shine.

The Step-by-Step Process to Restore the Shine

Always start with the gentlest method and work your way up if needed.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning

Often, a dull surface is just a dirty surface.

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water.

  2. Use a soft sponge or cloth to thoroughly clean the entire surface. This removes grease, film, and debris that hide the natural shine.

  3. Rinse well with clean water and dry completely with a microfiber cloth.

  4. Test: Is it shiny now? If yes, you're done! If not, move to Step 2.

Step 2: Polish for a Light Shine (Maintenance)

This is for surfaces that are dull but not significantly scratched.

  1. Ensure the surface is completely clean and dry.

  2. Apply a small amount of solid surface polish or a non-abrasive automotive polish to a soft, clean microfiber cloth.

  3. Using small, circular motions, work the polish into a manageable section (e.g., a 2x2 ft area).

  4. Continue buffing until the polish becomes clear and almost invisible. You should see the shine appearing.

  5. Repeat section by section across the entire countertop.

  6. Once the whole surface is done, use a fresh, dry microfiber cloth to do a final buff, removing any slight residue and maximizing the shine.

Step 3: Sanding and Polishing for Deep Scratches or a Full Restoration

If your surface has visible scratches or is very dull, you need to sand out the imperfections before you can polish.

⚠️ Important Sanding Rule: You MUST wet sand. This means keeping the surface and sandpaper wet with water to act as a lubricant, prevent clogging the paper, and ensure an even finish.

  1. Clean: Start with a perfectly clean surface.

  2. Start with a Coarser Grit (if needed): For deep scratches, start with 320-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Lightly sand the scratched area only, always using a sanding block and plenty of water. Sand until the scratch is gone. Never skip grits!

  3. Move to a Medium Grit: Switch to 400-grit paper. Wet sand the entire area you're working on (not just the scratch) to blend the repair and remove the scratches left by the 320-grit paper. Sand in a consistent, circular or back-and-forth motion.

  4. Move to a Fine Grit: Switch to 600-grit paper. Wet sand the entire area again. This will create a smooth, matte finish that is ready for polishing.

  5. Thoroughly Clean: Wash the entire sanded area with soap and water to remove all sanding residue. Dry completely.

  6. Polish: Now, follow the Polish for a Light Shine method (Step 2) above. The polish will transform the matte 600-grit finish into a high-gloss, like-new shine.

Why Do Solid Surface Countertops Lose Their Shine?

Over time, solid surface countertops can lose their shine due to several reasons. One of the most common reasons is the build-up of dirt, grime, and soap scum. These contaminants can create a film on the surface of the countertop, making it appear dull and lacklustre.

Another reason is the use of mild abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, which can scratch the surface of the countertop, causing it to lose its shine. Exposure to heat can also cause damage to the surface of the countertop, making it appear dull or faded.

Can I Use Vinegar to Clean my Solid Surface Countertops?

It’s not recommended to use vinegar to clean solid surface worktops as it can cause discolouration and damage to the surface. Instead, use soapy water or cleaner and a soft cloth.

Can I use Abrasive Cleaners on my Solid Surface Countertops?

You should avoid using abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or steel wool on your solid surface countertops, as they can damage the surface. Use an ammonia-based cleaner or a regular household cleaner and a soft cloth.

How Often Should I Polish my Solid Surface Countertops?

You should polish your solid surface countertops once every six months or as needed. Over-polishing can damage the surface, so be careful not to overdo it.
