How to Repair Scratches on Koris Solid Surface Materials

Solid surface materials like Corian, Hi-Macs, Koris and other acrylic or polyester-based products are popular for countertops, sinks, and furniture due to their durability and seamless appearance. However, even the toughest surfaces can develop scratches over time. The good news is that many scratches can be repaired with the right techniques.

Types of Scratches and Repair Methods

1. Light Surface Scratches

• Cause: Daily wear, utensils, or cleaning abrasives.

• Repair Method: Use a mild abrasive cleaner or a non-gel toothpaste with a soft cloth. Gently buff in circular motions until the scratch disappears. Rinse and polish with a microfiber cloth.

2. Moderate Scratches

• Cause: Deeper marks from knives, keys, or sharp objects.

• Repair Method:

• Wet sanding with 400-600 grit sandpaper (use water to lubricate).

• Follow with 800-1000 grit for a smoother finish.

• Buff with a polishing compound and a soft pad to restore shine.

3. Deep Scratches or Gouges

• Cause: Heavy impact or deep cuts.

• Repair Method:

• Clean the area and lightly sand with 220-320 grit sandpaper.

• Fill with a solid surface repair paste (color-matched if possible).

• Sand again with finer grits (600-1000) and polish to blend with the surrounding surface.

Tip: For large areas, an orbital sander can save time and provide a more even finish.

Preventing Future Scratches

• Use cutting boards instead of direct knife contact.

• Avoid abrasive cleaners—opt for mild soap and water.

• Place felt pads under heavy objects to prevent dragging.

Restoring the Finish

Matte/Satin Finish: Continue blending with a gray pad until the area matches the surrounding surface.

Semi-Gloss Finish: After using the gray pad, follow with a white pad to enhance the shine.

High-Gloss Finish: Finish by applying a countertop polish with a soft microfiber cloth, buffing in circular motions for a uniform gloss.
